Music Meets Science - Two Extraordinary Concert Evenings

During the DPG Spring Meeting in Dresden, the Dresden Philharmonic invites you to two special musical experiences. They will take place in the Kulturpalast Dresden – one of the most modern and acoustically excellent concert halls in Europe – and offer a fascinating connection between science and the arts. Conference participants can use the discount code "DPG" to purchase tickets for € 8.00 in all price categories!

Take the opportunity to experience Dresden not only as a place of intensive scientific discussion, but also as a stage for exceptional musical and cinematic art. Both evenings offer a fascinating bridge between science, vision, and emotion – very much in the spirit of the curiosity that drives both physics and music.

A cinematic masterpiece that will thrill all space enthusiasts: Fritz Lang’s Woman in the Moon (1929) is considered one of the first major science-fiction films – and an astonishingly scientifically accurate vision of space travel. The countdown before a rocket launch, now a standard element of any space mission, was introduced here for the very first time. Lang’s portrayal of gravity and rocket technology in an ambitious lunar expedition is infused with scientific curiosity – a cinematic precursor of the modern space age!

The film will be accompanied live on the state-of-the-art concert organ of the Kulturpalast by the exceptional organist Cameron Carpenter, whose energetic virtuosity brings the pioneering spirit of this early science-fiction work vividly to life. An evening in which technological enthusiasm, art, and visions of the future blend into an exhilarating experience.

Thursday, 12 March 2026, 19:00 – Richard Strauss: Elektra
A gripping operatic classic in the concert hall – with lighting direction and scenic elements

With Elektra, Richard Strauss created a musical experiment of electrifying intensity – a work that is not only a family tragedy infused with deep psychology, but also offers points of connection to the natural sciences. Even the title evokes energy and tension: like a charged system, the music accumulates emotional potential until it erupts in a massive release. More than 100 musicians fill the stage to the last seat, unfolding an overwhelming soundscape. Dissonances, dense harmonic structures, and extreme dynamics create an interplay of buildup and collapse. At the same time, Elektra is something like an acoustic perception experiment: through abrupt contrasts, layered sounds, and extreme volume levels, Strauss pushes the limits of the audible, creating a study in tension, expectation, and resolution – all in under two hours!

Under the direction of Dresden Philharmonic’s Chief Conductor Sir Donald Runnicles, this monumental work unfolds in a concert performance that brings out the essence of the music in its purest form while its spatial staging also draws the audience into the experience.
